Hey guys!!
I’m not really sure if anyone actually noticed, but my blog did disappear for the best part of six months…yes six whole months!! Tell me you noticed…
Basically at the end of January my fiancé and I, Benn packed up our entire lives in Brisbane, Australia and moved to London!
It has always been a dream of mine to live life in another country, specifically London. I love a challenge & as fabulous as Brisbane is…it’s a bit small and opportunity’s are limited. I needed to know what it would be like to live in a such a big city and here I bloody am. I DID IT!!
-
Where we lived in Shoreditch for 4 weeks. -
On the 26th of January we jumped on a one way flight to start a brand new life adventure in a city with 8.6mil humans…just a little more than Brisbane’s 2mil. That alone was a scary thought.
We arrived and lived in Shoreditch (east-london) in an air bnb, with no other belongings than the 30kg we brought each. I just want to let you know it was NOT easy bringing only 30kgs of my belongings in Winter. But alas, we made it work.
At first I was so bloody excited for our adventure and it was also my birthday on arrival. Benn surprised me with a few days in my favourite city, Paris, and it all seemed like life in another country would be easy right? Wrong!
Roll on the end of the month in our air bnb, we were still jobless & wondering what to do next. Luckily, I have a wonderful Uncle that lives in Cambridge, who so kindly let us live with him until we secured jobs.
Within 8 weeks of arriving in London, Benn & I had secured jobs, a flat in Notting Hill and life in London was on the right track.
Fast forward 4 months later and here are the lessons I have learnt about moving your life to another country.
It’s hard, really hard, but oh so worth it
You are going to encounter challenges and wonder why the heck you made this decision, but back yourself and stay positive! I know it is easier said than done but try to remember nothing stays the same forever & you will find your feet. The feeling of setting up your life in another country is one that is rewarding beyond measure.
This is the best way to leave your comfort zone
I thought I was a pretty dependant person in Oz, but moving overseas has shown me I wasn’t really. I mean my parents lived a 2 minute drive away which meant I could be careless and leave my keys at home without too many problems. I have well and truly left my comfort bubble & with my independence has come a new confidence. There is no doubt this experience has been character building beyond belief. I have been able to achieve the things I feared most about moving and it was so good to push myself and rise to the challenge.
You’ll find new friends wherever you go
Coming to a new country is like starting all over again with your social circle. I have met so many new people and I have renewed friendships with friends from Oz that have also moved to London. In this day and age there is always Facebook and more apps than we know what do with…you will be fine.
Everything Is NEW!!
This for me was the most exciting part about moving to a new place. The exposure to new coffee shops, foods, shopping and locations definitely gives you a new perspective on the world we live in. Challenging your tastes with a good shake up is a great thing!
It will change your life, forever!
I really think I will never be the same after this experience. It has been so rewarding and we are only 6 months in. Whilst it has made me more grateful for the beautiful country I live in and the amazing family I miss everyday, I don’t want to miss a second of every opportunity we have over here.
Have you move abroad? I would love to know your experiences.

Thank you mate, your such a good friend & I misss your little face so much!! xxx
I can totally resonate with this. I moved to Australia 4 years ago (from Scotland) and it was so exciting but oh-so-scary too. As soon as we got jobs everything started falling into place. Plus when my (now) husband joined a local football (sorry, soccer) team then we met an amazing group of friends that way too. Stick in, it is all worth it and at least you can say you DID IT and you will never wonder “what if” 🙂 xx
Aw this was so lovely to read. It’s so nice to see someone that can completely relate to what you are feeling. Yess, things definitely start to fall into place when you get a job and start making friends. That’s so great that it all worked out for you aswell!! Definitely worth it & I’m so glad I won’t have that what if feeling xx 😘😘
